Frequently asked questions about Cosmetic Dentistry
What is the difference between general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry?
While both focus on your oral health, general dentistry prioritizes treating and preventing dental issues like cavities and gum disease, maintaining overall oral health. Cosmetic dentistry, on the other hand, aims to enhance the appearance of your teeth and smile. It achieves this through procedures like whitening, veneers and bridges, addressing concerns like discolouration, chips or gaps. Think of it this way: general dentistry ensures your smile functions well, while cosmetic dentistry helps it shine brighter.
Does cosmetic dentistry hurt?
The Honce Dentistry team prioritizes your comfort and safety no matter the cosmetic dental procedure. We use techniques like local anesthesia and advanced technology to make cosmetic dentistry as pain-free as possible.
How long do cosmetic dentistry results last?
Longevity depends on the procedure and individual care. With proper care, veneers can last on average 10-15 years, crowns 15-25 years, bridges 10-15 years. Whitening results can last several months to a year or more.
How do CEREC crowns differ from traditional crowns?
Traditional dental crowns usually require multiple appointments, temporary crowns and fabrication outside the dental office. CEREC crowns are created in-house using digital technology, allowing for a single-visit process. In some cases, CEREC crowns can also be more tooth-conserving.
Can CEREC crowns be used for all types of tooth damage?
CEREC crowns differ from traditional crowns in two key ways: materials and process.
- Materials: Traditional crowns are often made of metal alloys, sometimes with a porcelain facing. While durable, the metal can show through, especially at the gumline, resulting in a less natural look. CEREC crowns, on the other hand, are typically made from tooth-coloured, ultra-hard porcelain or zirconia. This allows them to blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth for a more natural appearance.
- Process: Traditional crowns require multiple visits to the dentist. During the first visit, your dentist will prepare the tooth and take an impression. This impression is then sent to a dental lab where the crown is custom-made. You’ll wear a temporary crown in the meantime. During the second visit, the permanent crown will be placed and cemented. CEREC crowns, however, leverage computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing (CAM) technology. An impression is taken digitally using a scanning device. The dentist then uses design software to create a custom 3D model of the crown on the computer. This model is sent to a milling machine in the office that precisely crafts the crown from a ceramic block. The entire process can often be completed in a single visit.
Are there alternatives to veneers for minor cosmetic concerns?
Alternatives include:
- Bonding: This resin applied to the tooth can correct minor chips, cracks or gaps. Bonding is less durable than veneers but minimally invasive.
- Enamel shaping and contouring: This minor reshaping of tooth enamel can address mild irregularities.
- Teeth whitening can address mild discolouration and staining.
How do veneers impact tooth sensitivity?
Some patients may experience temporary increased sensitivity after getting veneers. Honce Dentistry uses techniques like desensitizing toothpaste and gentle procedures to minimize discomfort. The sensitivity typically subsides within a few days or weeks.
What are the different types of dental bridges, and which one is right for me?
The right bridge for you depends on several factors, like the number of missing teeth, location and jawbone health. A traditional (fixed) bridge uses crowns on adjacent teeth to anchor false teeth in the gap. A cantilever bridge uses crowns on only one side of the gap. An implant-supported bridge uses dental implants for support, offering improved stability and longevity. We can assess your needs and recommend the most suitable bridge type.
Do bridges require special cleaning techniques?
Bridges require brushing and flossing regularly, paying particular attention to the underside of the bridge. Interdental cleaners like floss threaders can help with this. So can regular dental checkups, which help ensure proper cleaning and bridge maintenance.
Are there any risks associated with professional teeth whitening?
The advanced blue LED light-accelerated whitening system used in our dental office minimizes discomfort and reduces sensitivity.
You could experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation with take-home kits. You can easily manage either with desensitizing toothpaste or gels.
Can whitening be done safely on sensitive teeth?
It’s absolutely possible to safely whiten sensitive teeth. We can assess your tooth sensitivity and recommend a suitable whitening option.
Are cosmetic procedures affordable?
We understand financial concerns and offer flexible payment options.
