As with any groundbreaking technology, new companies emerge to innovate and refine existing ideas.
In 1998 a company with a novel idea got FDA clearance to start manufacturing clear retainers that would actually move teeth in a way that is similar to wearing regular braces. These clear aligners were successful for many reasons, specifically with adults who wanted to straighten their teeth without having to deal with traditional braces. The ability to slide these retainers over the teeth, go to work, take them out when eating, and at social gatherings, made it a hit throughout the world. The company is called Invisalign, and they have become a recognizable name in the industry.
Just like all great technology, other companies surface to try to improve upon ideas and push their own. SureSmile is one of them, seeking to improve upon what Invisalign has started.
What are the differences between SureSmile and Invisalign? Are they similar and is one truly better than the other? Here’s a perspective on some key elements:
1. Scan Accuracy. SureSmile and Invisalign require an accurate copy of your teeth, and digital scanning is the preferred method of choice for both companies. Suresmile has an advantage in this arena currently, as they require scans specifically utilizing their scanner, called a Primescan. This particular scanner is considered the most accurate scanner on the market and allows for almost perfect adaptation of their aligners. Invisalign also allows patients to have regular impressions taken, with those impressions poured up in stone, and then scanned at the company. Though this allows ANY dental office to be able to submit cases for Invisalign trays, there is a substantial increase in error that is inherent in the trays made from these impressions as the digital method is considerably more accurate.
2. Personalization and Efficiency. SureSmile is tailored for precise tooth movement and customization. This means cases may take less or more time, depending on patient progress. While Invisalign is also after similar outcomes, its average wear time is 12-18 months whereas SureSmile cases can take as little as 6 and as long as 18 months.
3. Corrective Adjustments. SureSmile cases usually require fewer corrective adjustments. The accuracy of their technology minimizes the number of midcourse corrections needed to be made, making your journey from start to completion that much more efficient and simple.
4. Custom Costs. The final cost of both aligner treatments is ultimately determined by the individual provider, but typically SureSmile is cheaper overall as the number of aligners needed to complete your case is less.
In summary, both SureSmile and Invisalign offer advantageous solutions and produce excellent results. We love the improvements we see SureSmile making to their products and for our patients, especially with their custom scanning technology. Ultimately, the clear winner is what you choose is best for you!
